Converting your video file type on a Mac

While this post is not entirely for the motorcycle crowd, I do know a lot of riders that shoot video while on their bikes.  And this post is mostly for you.

If you have been following me for some time, you may have noticed the camera that I now shoot with while riding.  Its the Vivitar DVR-787HD camera.  This little camera shoots really nice full HD video (1080p), has a great wide angle, comes with a crazy amount of mounts (if you get that kit) and is ridiculously inexpensive.  But, for those of us on a Mac computer the file format that this camera records to can lead us down a bad road.  And that format is AVI. Now the AVI format has been used on Windows computers forever, but out of the box, it is not a format that Mac computers like.  So what can we do.

Well I run on a Mac using Final Cut Pro X as my editor and have no problems with the avi format, but I really think that is because Final Cut downloads additional files that allow it to handle just about anything that you can throw at it.  But many people are using or will be using software like iMovie.  Now I love iMovie and think its a fantastic piece of software, but its no good if it can’t handle your video files.

So here comes a little piece of software called ‘Handbrake’.  The video below will run through the whole process of how to use it.  And this software is entirely free.  Which is always great.

Hope this videos helps!
