Transfer or Backup your GoPro Style Camera data to an External Hard drive with No Computer

I like to take pictures and record footage when I’m out riding.  And that’s all great when I have the opportunity to come home at the end of the day and copy all my photos and footage onto my computer.  But this year (and especially next year) we will have many rides that I will be gone for multiple days.  So here comes the dilemma.  Do I bring a laptop with me?  macbookMy answer is no.  Main reason is that it takes up a lot of space that I just don’t have.  Also laptops are expensive and Id rather not have it bouncing around my saddlebags.  Whats the answer then?

Well earlier this year I picked up a Kingston Mobilelite G2 which is a device that lets my iPhone or iPad connect wirelessly to an sd card or USBmobilelite g2 stick.  My thoughts were if this would allow my to connect a USB external hard drive and move data from a connected sd card to a connected hard drive.  Take a look at the video to see the setup and how well it works.

Price wise we are looking at about $60 for the Kingston Mobilelite G2 (Kingston does now make a Mobilelite G3) and the ADATA HD650 hard drive that I purchased came in at under $70. Be aware that this is a combination that I got to work, there may be hard drives out there that require more power then the Mobilelite can output.  Make sure to test your drive a head of time.  But when it works … It’s a Great way to carry extra storage on those long trips!
