So Mary and I decided to take a private off-road beginners training course this past weekend and both the Versys and the Vstrom performed reasonably well. I think they could have done better but pretty sure there were some factors. Mainly our own knowledge and abilities plus having more dedicated off-road tires. The Shinko 705’s did well on the packed stuff, but once we got into the sand and loose and rocky gravel, you could tell that they were losing grip. Also, the Versys and its small front tire worked fine on the packed stuff and the Shinkos, but once we got into the sand and more technical riding the 17” front definitely became noticeable.
So Can the Versys and Vstrom do off Road? Id say the Vstrom can do it better, that 19” Front definitely helps, but you really just want to judge your own ability and realize that both of these bikes (Kawasaki Versys 650 and Suzuki Vstrom 650) are quite heavy and tall in comparison to dual-sport and dirt bikes. Judge the road/path that you are taking and make sure that if something happens you can get yourself out. Both Mary and I dropped our bikes numerous times and by the end of the day, I definitely didn’t have the strength to lift the bike from a fall. I could barely stand up I was so exhausted. Can the Versys and Vstrom off-road. Sure! I Just don’t go crazy.
